Our History
Founded in 2003 by world-renowned ice dance coaches Alexei Kiliakov and Elena Novak, WISA was built on a simple but ambitious vision: to create a complete training system capable of developing skaters from their first steps on the ice to the highest levels of international competition.
Originally established as the Wheaton Ice Skating Academy at Wheaton Ice Arena in Montgomery County, Maryland, WISA quickly became a pioneer in athlete development. As the academy expanded beyond its original home and throughout the greater Washington region, the WISA name evolved to represent the Washington Figure Skating Academy while preserving the legacy and values on which it was founded.
As the program grew, so did its impact. Generations of skaters progressed through the academy, advancing from introductory lessons to national championships, international events, and world-class competition.
In 2020, WISA entered a new era by relocating its primary training base to Ion International Training Center in Leesburg, Virginia. Today, the academy continues to build on more than two decades of excellence while training the next generation of champions.

Our program is built around a unique start-to-finish training model that guides skaters through every stage of development. Whether a child is stepping onto the ice for the first time or preparing for international competition, they are part of the same long-term system designed to help them reach their full potential.
This philosophy has made WISA a trendsetter within the skating world. As one of the only elite figure skating schools in the world where athlete pathways are the central focus of our program, WISA continues to create an environment where skaters can grow within a single academy, supported by consistent coaching, progressive training, and a shared vision for success.
The result is a culture where excellence and accessibility go hand in hand. Every skater is challenged to improve, every achievement is celebrated, and every athlete is given the opportunity to dream big.
